I've read some Paypal horror stories lately and never thought that I would experience the same.

My first encounter was when my account got limited due to a spyware, I think.

Next (just recently) is a system error which caused a withdrawal to occur without me getting the funds in my bank account (and until now, I still haven't retrieved that amount).

The third and most recent is a dispute that occurred when my client paid me yet Paypal held the payment.

Whew... This is too much!

Been trying to call Paypal, yet the process is very long -- my IDD credits are already zero. Lots of channels to go through and yet, there's no resolution yet to my dilemmas.

Yes, I am an independent contractor for freelance writing jobs. Been with Odesk, building my portfolio and tried hiring writers to do some tasks. However, just now, I encountered a buyer who seemed to be very understanding and all. I really regret my choice of taking the particular job.

Mercer, a global human resources consulting firm helping organizations empower their people attain success in the business, released the results of the Quality of Living Survey for 2010.

With this, Manila, the capital of the Philippines, was referred to directly – stating how this particular city experienced tremendous natural disasters during the past year, therefore resulting to the low rank it attained as per the survey mentioned, placing 172^nd among the 221 cities surveyed all throughout the world. From a score of 69.9 in 2009, the Philippines’ metro hub dodged to 62.8

This score is based on an index score of 100, compared against the base city, New York.

Having gone through typhoons, earthquakes, and cyclones in 2009 and early 2010, Manila, together with other cities in Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand, were ranked low in the said survey. Aside from the natural calamities, these mentioned cities were also prone to internal conflicts, crimes, pollution, and other hazards to optimum living of their citizens.

Asia’s leading city when it comes to these criteria, Singapore, ranked 28^th, as it was described to promote its financial growth, education (especially to international students), and expatriates’ housing.

Off to My Dream Job: To the Nazareth Formation House

Four days have passed since we went to the Nazareth Formation House to inquire about their program and their job vacancies. I saw their post at www.jobsiland.com a few days ago before going there, and true enough, I realized that it was really the job of my dreams.

To care for various personalities, counsel, and to devote a life with meaning ... This is my primary aim. I don't want to live just for nothing. In fact, my life was always lived to spend days away from idleness.

I definitely hate it when I am doing nothing. Sure, I do need to take a break and take some hours away from my current work (freelance writing/editing/outsourcing), but whenever I see my email inbox without new messages, or when I seem to run out of things to do, I think again and try to do something. Perhaps its plain OC-ness, but I can't help it.

And so now I try to see myself out-of-the-box and venture onto another league. Dealing mostly with the personality/psychological issues of others, I deem that this stint I am eying on is very much my line of work.

Not that I am not patronizing my college course, but hey, we've also got a Psychiatric Nursing subject and field in our course. It's just a different field, mainly because I won't be in the hospital (which most nurses opt for).

Why Not a Hospital?

I kind of see it as not my type of work. Period. A hospital is a place where we get to do routine tasks, meet different people who have certain medical conditions, and in the long run, we bump across different patients. There's no continuity (oh maybe there is, but the main goal is primarily to aid the sick or well; to rehabilitate them onto a better condition).

Likewise, I think that for me to work in a hospital, I have to basically be in the zone. Sure, I may have went through OJTs and all, but along the course of trainings, I really can't imagine myself being in this workplace. And so I find the therapeutic center like the Nazareth Formation House as the place where I belong.

It's not that I am not flexible or so, but why will I force myself to do things I really don't want to do? In the first place, I will be the one to suffer in the end if I don't listen to my heart.

Besides, I will still be caring for people in this place of work. It's just another venue. A paradise. A haven for people like me who yearns for caring too.

"May Bukas Pa" tops the night with inspiring finale

“May Bukas Pa,” a hit teleserye from ABS-CBN, just shot off its finale episode tonight, Feb. 5, 2010 – catching avid fans’ hearts with its surprising ending.

Santino, the “miracle boy,” truly captured the viewers’ hearts with his littlest antics and most likely due to his special connection with “Bro,” the personification of Jesus Christ.

Santino braved all the odds that come his way, facing plights involving kidnappers, plagues, greedy businessmen, gambling lords, evil mistresses, and other villains. Together with his numerous “fathers,” titos, titas, ates, kuyas, and pals, Santino conquered every challenge.

As I can vividly recall, the little Santino had to confront the then-cold hearted city mayor Enrique (Albert Martinez) due to his dread for the monks who don’t get along with his worldly plans. Wanting to build a casino resort to soothe his materialistic plans, he tried to bring Santino and the fathers down. With his wife Malena, he did whatever he can to bring to reality all of his visions.

But with Santino’s natural instincts to follow whatever Bro tells him, and out of his kind heart, even Mayor Enrique was touched in the end. Likewise, Enrique later learned that Santino is his son.

The wonder kid’s journey of transforming Barrio Pag-Asa went on and on. Throughout the teleserye’s plot, he encountered different personalities who had their own dilemmas, all of which Santino tried to solve. With God’s help, every life he touched turned out to be healed. And so they all found refuge in Santino’s arms.

Candid Moments of May Bukas Pa

Our family never fails to watch “May Bukas Pa”. Every night after dinner, we would tune in to what may happen next to Santino. We would joke about Santino, always being kidnapped, the kids stowing away, and with Santino, meeting new people every now and then.

However, what makes us laugh the most are as follow:

- the chismosas – Kimberly, Jennifer, and Rosalie (who would always bring the townsfolk with news of all sorts). They will go everyday to Baby and Atong’s (Arlene Muhlach and Ogie Diaz) store to spread their latest chika. And as usual, Atong would ask the three to layas! On and on, this would occur, but everyday too, they would return to the store to tell the latest chismax.

Mga tagapagsalansan ng delata – the other characters, this time, the extras who caught our attention, are the tagapagsalansan ng de lata at Atong and Baby’s store. Everyday, they will be featured at the teleserye, still fixing the canned goods and bigas (seemingly never-ending fixing).

Hepe – The head of the police task force at Bagong Pag-asa is also one of the characters who catches our attention. We remember him as being a seemingly kontrabida at first as he would always be against Mario (Tonton Gutierrez), who is against the mayor. He will usually be clothed with a bib on his chest while eating fried chicken.

Nevertheless, May Bukas Pa will always be a part of us, even if it has ended already.

From iPhones to Writing: Thoughts, thoughts, thoughts

iPhones are all the range today and so are the desires of many who wish to have this delectable treat. And so while working on some articles about iPhones for a certain client, I usually think about the time I will be having this phone.

An iPhone just seems so far from reality as of now, but hopefully, later on, when I have the budget, I can soon afford one. Or perhaps a newer trend shall arise and will captivate my senses once more.

True enough, this is just one of my aspirations when it comes to the techie world. Gone were the days when I am just waiting for my parents’ allowance (which I would keep earnestly) and wait for the day when I can buy a book for 200 pesos. Now, I can readily avail of my most prized books, jewelries, clothes, foodstuffs, and many others. Even though they are not as expensive as those that millionaires buy, still, I still enjoy the fruits of my labor.

All these are brought about by my love for writing. Yes, even though I graduated from Nursing, I am also a writer by my own right. That was May 2009 when I first experienced earning through writing via the Internet.

Craigslist.com – This was the platform I made use of when I tried looking for a writing job after graduation. Actually, during those times, I was still reviewing for the November 2009 Nursing board exams. But since I was also trying to come up with a way to collect a sum of money to pay for the remaining balance at school, I have decided to apply for a writing job.

Alas, my application was accepted and for the first time, I received my first writing assignment. I was given a total of 4000 words to write a day. Materials were given to be rewritten and so I got a headstart and learned the workings of the business somehow.

But after 9 days, I thought of giving up on the assignments as I cannot manage anymore. I realized that I cannot go on the writing tasks with the pay not as much as I thought equals the work.

Nonetheless, for experience, I am still thankful of the experience. That was just the beginning of a plight that I thought would never come. After that, I pursued some more projects from various clients. By scouting the Net and still using Craigslist as my job site platform, I managed to find more jobs. The pay increased. At that time, I got to receive around $1.5 per 500 words. Time came and that increased to $2.50. Today, the regular rate comes at $4 per 500 words and $3.50 for bulk orders (write in a comment here below for more details).

I learned how to write e-books, website articles, spins, SEO articles, and even delved into internet marketing. Through the help of my friendly clients, I likewise got onto managing my own team of writers as much as I took on writing assignments on my own.

As they say, hard work does it. And so that’s absolutely true. With the experiences I have had with writing for web content, e-books, and other articles, I’ve learned to keep track of my strengths, putting them to good use, while at the same time, honing others’ capabilities to develop a nation that’s efficient in writing their heart out.

Sometimes it can be pretty tough too, for with the endless streams of writers and clients having their own personalities and skills, I have to face the truth: that patience and professional approaches do wonders.

One time, I encountered writers who just can’t communicate that well with regards their true situation. There are some who flake off, letting me know that they did not make it to the deadline because of PTA meetings (had to substitute for their parents), his sister was sick, and a whole lot more. In the end, I had to choose too. Will I tolerate these reasons and be as nice as ever? Or will I be so strict that the writer won’t dare email me again?

I’ve come to a conclusion that time when I’ve had enough – that writers do have their own reasons, but when it comes to professional work, it’s either you give in or you give up. You give in because of humane treatments. You give up because your patience runs out and you try to keep up to a normal person’s routines.

Well, well, well… I have done those instincts before. But trust me, they never work in the long run. Procrastination may be hard to beat, but with practice, you’ll get used to the habit of just typing whatever comes to your mind at zero minutes at all.

Still living it out, I guess. The times are changing now and my writing career seems to flourish still. At the same time, I get a feeling that I am also destined to make it as a nurse/psychologist/psychiatrist someday, but deep inside, I know I am still a writer. Nothing more, nothing less.

Friday Thoughts -- One Text Says It All

Got a text message today and was at first hesitant to read it, but after digesting the message, I felt blessed and inspired to go further (even if my right shoulder is still aching!)

Here is the text message from a text friend:

One day, the villagers decided to pray for rain. On the day of prayer everyone gathered and only one 1 boy came with an umbrella.

That's FAITH.

When you throw a 1 year old baby in the air, he laughs because he knows you will catch him.

That's TRUST.

Every night we go to bed we're not sure that we'll get up tomorrow, but we still have many plans for the coming day.

That's HOPE.

Have faith, trust in GOD and never lose hope.

Indeed, times may come when God may seem to abandon us. I for one, also get that feeling that sometimes, life is unfair and that I just don't have a good future ahead. I don't get what I want and that God will not give me what I simply want.

But I soon come to realize, God is just so good that He does not want me to come unprepared. I want something that is not yet ripe to be harvested. I still need to grow and in time, if it will come, it will come.

Things are often like that. We want something but the timing is not right. True enough, it takes patience, perseverance, and complete trust and faith that everyday, we can survive every challenge. It may thus be tiring, but in the long run, patience pays off.

I do felt like comparing myself with other people and end up unhappy. That was one of my biggest mistakes. I should not envy others for having such life, for I believe that they too have miseries which make them look at me and sigh, perhaps thinking that they also want to have a life like mine.

Making everyday count. I now value this practice that serves as the key to a fulfilling life. Never keep your mind idle, for as the saying goes, "An idle mind is the devil's workshop."

I saw that post at a church's store and now am applying that to stay away from the ill works of the Fallen Ones. Think about plainly doing nothing and letting time pass in vain. Isn't that leading you off your true mission? All brought by keeping yourself preoccupied with insane thoughts... which in truth must be banished.

November 2009 Nursing Board Exams Results -- Coming Soon!

The November 2009 Nursing board exams results are one of the most searched throughout the first quarter of 2010 by first-timers and re-takers alike. Held last November 29 and 30, 2009 at different provinces and at the National Capital Region, the examinations brought out various feelings of tension, anxiety, and stress to test-takers and families alike.

Being one of those first-timers, I do feel the stress that is most likely the result of thinking about whatever the outcome might be. The November 2009 Nursing board exams may have been downright over, but the thoughts that fill one's head whenever we think about how the exams may result to do make us feel like there is nothing else we can do but relax. And did I say, relax?

While waiting for the November 2009 Nursing board exams results, I find myself wandering through another journey yet to unfold. Because of the hurly-burly crowd of nurses waiting for their own stints here and abroad, I wonder, how in the world will we be able to find a spot somewhere (if ever there really is a somewhere out there).

Try to think of it. How many nurses in the Philippines today have a job? Are they compensated well? Are they receiving the same amount that is due for their untiring labor of love? It's for you to judge, but as for me, I still believe that there's hope for a country that has a lot of hope to succeed at whatever it dreams of.

The November 2009 Nursing board exams results may be some days away, I have heard, but I think the best to be done is to just hope for the best and yet still accept whatever has been given. After all, we are the masters of our destiny. Whatever has been given has its own purpose.

What a Day! (ATMs and mixed thoughts)

What a day it really is... It all started with my ATM money being debited and so I cannot get the supposed-to-be Php 4000 for my writers and for my salary.

Upon being early at Robinson's Place Lipa today at around past 9 am, after accompanying my mother to the supermarket, I rushed to the ATM to get my money, but unfortunately, as I tried to inquire my balance, there came a Transaction Cannot be Processed sign flashed. I was not contented and so I tried to withdraw. Again, the message flashed. From that, I stopped transacting and got my card out.

I tried to withdraw from the other ATM machines at the mall and became unsuccessful in the transactions. From there, I soon had the chance to withdraw Php 1000 from the BDO ATM but was shocked to learn that I only had Php 360+ left in my ATM.

In awe with what I discovered, I hurried to my brother and mother to tell the news. They advised me to try again and so I did. But still, the balance remained as is. Later on, we decided to inquire from my bank itself (Unionbank). From there, we have learned that there might have been a possibility that my account had been debited due to their offline system a while ago. So that explains it, I thought. I just hoped that I wasn't hit by a modus operandi or so.

Well, Php 4000 is 4000, so I just wish that it wouldn't vanish just like that. I just learned a lesson from that incident: that it is better not to get too excited when withdrawing. It is also better to be sure of your balance (whether you can really transact or not), before you can actually withdraw.

SM Now and Then: My Incredible SM Experiences

Back to the Old SM Days
Shoe Mart (SM) will always be SM. As I can vividly remember, whenever we would be going out of town, especially to Manila, the trip will never be complete without a shopping experience at SM. True enough, during those days, I was not that aware of how commodities are being bought. All that mattered to me was that I wanted some new toys and that I am willing to scream at the top of my lungs to let my parents buy me my most sought-after goodies.
And so SM just seemed like a paradise to me then. All sorts of dolls, books, clothes, shoes, and more items came springing up as I grew up. Later on, I even managed to buy my own. But SM will always be SM (that stuck on my head).

The Haven for Shoppers and Fans
Now that we even have our own SM mall in our city, the “haven of shoppers” came closer and we, shoppers, can readily avail of the latest finds there are around. But then, it did not stop there. SM ventured into greater heights as they catered to mall tours, festivities, crafts, and other community-centered events.

I was thrilled to join some of them, that to include watching my favorite artists perform live (specifically Toni Gonzaga – whom I even got an autograph from)! I was really star-struck then. Even my little brother, who is a huge fan of Toni had to talk to our parents just to see her. Well, that was one of the first mall shows I have watched, so at that time, I really cannot believe that I was there.

Getting to talk to her, telling her how we are really fond of her singing and acting talent made my day – thus, I kept her autograph in my diary and am hoping that in the years to come, I would still be reminiscing that day when I proved how I am as a fan.

Basically Simple Pleasures
Awesome experiences do not necessarily mean availing the most expensive items on board. Thus, as my family just wants to save on our expenses as much as we want to find the best quality possible, we definitely discover that SM does have these features for us to go there. Offering a variety of goods and services readily affordable by people of our class, we certainly recommend taking a look at what SM has to provide in terms of various delectable choices. Out of 77,901 examinees, 32,617 passed the June 2009 Philippine Nursing board examinations (held June 6 - 7).

Golda Manto Yap, from the Felipe R. Verallo Memorial Foundation, topped the list of passers, with 86.80% rating.

Meanwhile, St. Paul University-Dumaguete got a 100% passing rate, with 112 examinees.

Follow up on the life of a freelance writer

Alright, so how has been the Coeline-a-holic thing going on lately? I admit, it has been a while since I last saw the blogging world, and I am so missing the whole personal online publication thing.,.

All these months, I've been into freelance writing/content writing/sales writing to try to express my craft into different leagues. It all started this May, so ever since, I hardly had time to do some online journals as well as memoirs (of a potato lover).

If you wanna learn more about my retreat from the diary-type writing for some time, try to have a feel of applying into some craigslist ads and offering your services to those who are in dire need of them. Yupp, I've been applying to www.manila.craigslist.com for some time now. And with the clients I've been getting, it was quite an experience already -- learning about the trade and the craft involved with these stuffs. Through experimenting and having first-time experiences, I also learned that the Internet do have some great people to work with professionally. It is not just a hub of scammers and the like, hence, I have met virtually nice people who knows how to treat people fairly.

Personal Note on the Hayden Kho Issue

Ang balitang Hayden Kho - Katrina Halili, etc. controversy ay patuloy na nag-iinit. Halos lahat ng mga headlines, flash reports, atbp. ay nagbibigay ng updates ukol dito. Kaya naman, tuwing mapapanood ko ito sa TV, sa simula't-simula pa lamang ng isyu ay talaga namang naglilitawan ang aking pananaw sa isyu.

Base sa pahayag ni Hayden Kho na "... Sana let us try to condemn the sin, not the sinner... " aking napag-isip-isip... May point naman siya. In fairness, kahit papaano, at kung ating iisipin -- oo nga, nagkamali siya nang kuhanan niya ng videos yung mga partners niya. Ngunit tulad nating lahat na may weaknesses, si Hayden ay nahulog sa bitag ng kanyang kahinaan. Base sa pakikinig at pagbabasa tungkol sa mind and its capabilities, nalaman kong lahat tayo ay may taglay na kahinaan. Ang kahinaang ito ay maaari nating malabanan sa pamamagitan ng maraming techniques. Pwede tayong mag-employ ng iba't-ibang defense mechanisms at coping means upang maka-cope sa mga stressors, mga hindi magandang experiences. And later, pag nasanay tayo sa mga maaaring maging habit na ang mga ito.

Sa case ni Hayden, naging resort niya ang sexual pleasure na naattain niya through making videos. It's just so sad for him kasi nagkataong nagkaconflict sila ng ex-friend niya, kaya ayun, naging talk of the town siya. Iba talaga pag sumapit ang tadhana... Hayy...

Well, for me, sana magkaroon pa rin ng space for forgiveness. And sana maiwasan naman ang pagdaragdag ng hindi makatotohanan ukol sa tunay na isyu. Kung anuman ang nangyari ay nangyari for a reason. More or less, ang incident na ito ay ang hudyat upang magising-gising na ang mga tao sa outcome ng mga actions.

We can't say, but for sure, marami ring gumagawa ng equivalent ng ginawa ni Hayden pero hindi lang sila namemedia. Pero asan sila ngayon? Nagpapatuloy pa rin malamang ng ginagawa nila! Kung iisipin, pwedeng sila sana ang nasa katayuan ni Hayden, pero hindi eh.. Showbiz kasi. At madali siyang mapapansin dahil doon. Kaya naman, sana lang, kung meron mang mabuting dulot ang isyung ito, panigurado, iyon yung lesson na ipinapaabot nito sa taong-bayan -- na magbago na para sa ikauunlad ng ating mga sarili...

Clueless

It’s been a different week by far. It seems pretty cool too, since I’ve gotten into what I call now as a “either I stay or go” stint. The life of an ordinary potato girl has yet to go anew.

The dream of a greener pasture still lives on. But as I come to think of the consequences I would have to face if ever I would be granted the chance to fulfill my dream, I just feel uncertain.

Okay, for those of you who do not know what I’m talking about here, well, in a few days I am about to find out the verdict: whether or not I’ll be leaving the Philippines for a while to work somewhere else – where a lion stands abound, and where chewing gum is forbidden. Yes, this is Singapore.

To Singapore, where the hardworking are blessed – this is where I will be bound for if ever God wills me to. This is where I suppose I will be staying over a period of time to enhance my independence, my capabilities, and my strengths and weaknesses as a person.

Alas, when that time comes that I will be required to face challenges that a normal adult usually faces, I think that this would also be the moment when I’d be ready to proclaim without hesitation that I am truly free. All this time, when my environment has always been a friendly one, where I don’t usually stand amidst a fierce crowd, I just am laid back, knowing that I always have my parents and family beside me. But this time, if ever God grants me the chance, then I’d better be ready.

This time, I should be brave enough to survive the tough life out there. I have to learn how it is to wash my laundry without being piled up with more than what I could handle. I must also learn how to iron my clothes so as to dress according to the nature of my supposed work. In there, I must learn how to travel by myself, without fears that I won’t end up at the wrong streets. In Singapore, I must realize that all I shall earn are products of hard labor and determination.

And just like it is in life, I know that even if I do not make it there, I must really strive hard to reach my destination. No matter what it takes, and no matter what happens, I shall soon fulfill my dreams.

Yet, in our own journeys, let us not forget that there are times when we just have to bear with the consequences that are packed along our choices. As we decide, let us also try to consider that there will definitely be pros and cons. Whatever these results might be, we just have to weigh them carefully. They may turn out small, but at a later time, they may end up so large that we won’t be able to handle them anymore. Hence, along our decision-making, hopefully, we will be able to stand up, beaming, that no matter what would happen, we are ready to accept anything life has to yet to bring.

Imagine, if we just apply the concepts here, what a wonderful world it would be! As human beings, of course, we fall into temptations, but nevertheless, we can beat these temptations. No More Newly Imported Books in the Philippines; the reason why

Fw: No More Newly Imported Books in the Philippines; the Reason Why

In the last few months, the importation of books into the Philippines has virtually stopped. (To those of you who frequent bookstores, I don't know if you've noticed.) The reason why is explained in this article by Robin Hemley, a University of Iowa creative writing professor currently on a fellowship in the Philippines.

If you have no time to read the article, the essence is that because the Bureau of Customs has decided to impose duties on the importation of books into the Philippines.

This, despite the 1950 Florence Agreement on the Importation of Educational, Scientific and Cultural Materials (which you can see here), which the Philippines ratified in 1979. The preamble of the agreement states: "Considering that the free exchange of ideas and knowledge and, in general, the widest possible dissemination of the diverse forms of self-expression used by civilizations are vitally important both for intellectual progress and international understanding, and consequently for the maintenance of world peace...", an indisputable proposition.

Here's an excerpt from Robin Hemley's article (i shortened it a bit. better if you can read the whole thing.) -

...Over coffee one afternoon, a book-industry professional (whom I can't
identify) told me that for the past two months virtually no imported books had entered the country, in part because of the success of one book, Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. The book, an international best seller, had apparently attracted the attention of customs officials. When an examiner named Rene Agulan opened a shipment of books, he demanded that duty be paid on it.

The importer of Twilight made a mistake and paid the duty requested. A mistake because such duty flies in the face of the Florence Agreement, a U.N. treaty that was signed by the Philippines in 1952, guaranteeing the free flow of "educational, scientific, and cultural materials" between countries and declaring that imported books should be duty-free. Mr. Agulan told the importer that because the books were not educational( i.e., textbooks) they were subject to duty. Perhaps they aren't educational, I might have argued, but aren't they "cultural"?
No matter. With this one success under their belt, customs curtailed all air shipments of books entering the country. Weeks went by as booksellers tried to get their books out of storage and started intense negotiations with various government officials.

What doubly frustrated booksellers and importers was that the explanations they received from various officials made no sense. It was clear that, for whatever reason"perhaps the 30-billion-peso ($625 million) shortfall in projected customs revenue"customs would go through the motions of having a reasonable argument while in fact having none at all.

Customs Undersecretary Espele Sales explained the government's position to a group of frustrated booksellers and importers in an Orwellian PowerPoint presentation, at which she reinterpreted the Florence Agreement as well as Philippine law RA 8047, providing for "the tax and duty-free importation of books or raw materials to be used in book publishing." For lack of a comma after the word "books," the undersecretary argued that only books "used in book publishing" (her underlining) were tax-exempt.

"What kind of book is that?" one publisher asked me afterward. "A book used in book publishing." And she laughed ruefully.

I thought about it. Maybe I should start writing a few. Harry the Cultural and Educational Potter and His Fondness for Baskerville Type.

Likewise, with the Florence Agreement, she argued that only educational books could be considered protected by the U.N. treaty. Customs would henceforth be the arbiter of what was and wasn't educational.

"For 50 years, everyone has misinterpreted the treaty and now you alone have interpreted it correctly?" she was asked.

"Yes," she told the stunned booksellers.

Throughout February and March, bookstores seemed on the verge of getting their books releasedâ€"all their documents were in order, but the rules kept changing. Now they were told that all books would be taxed: 1 percent for educational books and 5 percent for noneducational books. A nightmare scenario for the distributors; they imagined each shipment being held for months as an examiner sorted through the books. Obviously, most would simply pay the higher tax to avoid the hassle.

Distributors told me they weren't "capitulating" but merely paying under protest. After all, customs was violating an international treaty that had been abided by for over 50 years. Meanwhile, booksellers had to pay enormous storage fees. Those couldn't be waived, they were told, because the storage facilities were privately owned (by customs officials, a bookstore owner suggested ruefully). One bookstore had to pay $4,000 on a $10,000 shipment.

The day after the first shipment of books was released, an internal memo circulated in customs congratulating themselves for finally levying a duty on books, though no mention was made of their pride in breaking an international treaty...

*** As a bookworm, I feel like this has its pros and cons. First, as with the pro: The Filipino book-world will probably shine, since its international competitors will be lessened. However, this will still be depending on what the Filipino writers have to offer. Content still counts. And yes, lots out there (uhmm, out here too!) are just writing brilliant works, but still are not published authors.

For the cons: Well, diversity and balance in the Philippine book-o-sphere will be lessened. I mean, whoever gets to imagine bookstores without the latest celebrated books all over the world?... Hmmm...

Our Mom, Our Jewel

Every mother may have her own share of promoting goodness in her particular community or family, but with that term 'every,' only ONE particular mom is the BEST for her family. We might be different in terms of struggles and victories. We may differ in the values our parents promulgate. But along these differences still lies a remarkable fact: that our mothers definitely are jewels -- precious enough to be coined priceless.

My mother is presently a housewife/businesswoman. As she has spent most of her family life taking care of us (four children and our father) and at the same time, finding other ways to help my father earn a living, she makes sure that we'd still be living well: though not that financially up, but still, able to cope with life's turnings.

At the peak of the economic crisis starting at about the late 1990s, we definitely experienced the turn of the tides. Our family had to find alternative means as to how to recover from my father's unexpected job loss from Philippine Air Lines then. Being in Grade 3, I enthusiastically tried to help by selling various merchandise to my classmates (stationeries, stickers, pastries, you name it!). My mother encouraged us to use our creativity, as she also helps in the daily expenses through our then ongoing cooking business catering to the young pilots here in FAB.

Even after we stopped cooking for the pilots and even if the economic turmoil rose, she never ceased to develop more strategies just to mold our family's values. Along with our growth as individuals, she, along with us, grew spiritually. During these times of distress, she didn't lose hope. Day by day, she would remind us (as well live out her words) that God sees each one's hearts. Even though we may be down at one point, through hard work, together with many other values, we will soon reach our goals. As long as we stick together as a family, we will definitely make it, I recall her telling us everytime.

No matter what our situation is, what I really admire about my mother is her compassion for the needy. In her simple ways, she never forgets that there are more people who are poorer than us. Thus, whenever we have more than enough of our food, she likes it when we share some to the soldiers guarding the FAB entrance. She would also feel compassion to the beggars along the city -- as though they were also her children. In her, I find the inspiration to fight life's battles.

Another 'heroic' plight I encountered in her deeds would be regarding her compassion to the poor in spirit. For along the friendships we have made with various people (for you see, our home has always been a hub of friends -- we are always open to friends who would want to visit, just have a chat, etc.), and in those friendships, whenever they would be facing problems (of all sorts), one person they would usually run to is my mother. In fact, these people, as they most likely have discovered a mother in her too, even call her "Mama Dot" (my mother's nickname).

To them, Mama Dot is a refuge for the ill-hearted. They gather strength each time they share their sentiments with her. She serves as their counselor, second mom, foster mom, friend, sister, whatever the need calls her to be. Definitely, Mama is a mama to whoever dires one.

Indeed, my mother, Mama Dot, is a treasure to us. She is rare! So, to whoever who would ask, "Why is a mother (based on your own mom) considered a gem," I'll answer right away, "Because she is all that God means as His gift to man."

Now, if you're wondering 'Why Coeline??' Well, since Celine is my name, just about 2 years ago, I've been thinking of an internet handle that I'd be using for about forever, maybe. And so, when I pondered, thinking what unique name might not that used in the WWW, I decided to add an 'o' to celine, making it coeline (pronounced as che-lin).
